A group of women wearing pink sashes emblazoned with "Hen Party" were having a ball at a bar on the beach in Brighton today.

Post-Blueberry Picking

These are from Flint Creek Water Park in Mississippi. I went to cool off with some friends after blueberry picking at Pearl River Blues Farm in Lumberton, MS on June 3rd.

It's Monday night, and I made it to the Hi-Ho....with my camera. Instead of listening to the music, I spent the evening photographing everyone, but mostly the musicians. This image conveys the communal sense of bluegrass night, and the happiness it inspires.

It's been too long...

It has been much too long since my last post. I'm going to try to update this blog at least every week, if not more frequently. This photo is of the Lake Ponchartrain lakefront behind UNO. Liz Lew did me the honor of joining me for a bike ride to the lake so that I could take some photos this evening.

La Petit Mort - Ain'ts

Tis the season for Mardi Gras, and there are now parades everywhere and around all conceivable themes. Yesterday afternoon I witnessed "Barkus," the dog parade. Friday evening was "Ochan," a parade celebrating the Voo Doo gods.
This is a float, not much bigger than a shoe box, from Saturday's "Petit Rex" parade in my neighborhood, the Bywater. People put together miniature floats around the theme la petit mort. In this case, the float is a salute to the deceased "ain'ts," a former nickname for the Saints. 9, visible on the left, is Drew Brees.

65,000 abandoned homes

This is an abandoned home in the 9th Ward, not far from where I live. Specifically, this is on Marais just off the corner of Bartholomew. According to an NPR report last year, there are 65,000 abandoned homes in New Orleans. There were some before Katrina, but the number obviously mushroomed after the storm. I'm going to be photographing more of these buildings and investigating related issues for journalistic stories. Stay tuned!

Street vendors in Venice

This photo isn't what I would like it to be because I was shy about getting into the faces of these guys. Still the immigrant street vendors who work without a permit are a common sight. Here they are standing on the fondamenta that runs along the lagoon next to the Palazzo Ducale heading towards St. Elena.
